Alternative and Home Decorations DIY 101 - Primer -2

When you are young and live in an apartment or in a hostel, most likely you cannot do much to make this space seem your own. Especially if you want to do really interesting, alternative things, and even more, if you do not have a lot of money. Does this mean that you have to live with bare white walls and ugly furniture? Absolutely not! Here are a few alternative / punk / emo tips for homemade DIY design.

Color and atmosphere:

Most of the apartments and rooms in dormitories with standard white walls. Boring! Want to add color without much hassle? Christmas lights. Truly, there is no easier way to change the color, appearance and feel of a room than using these lights. They just hang up: you can just attach them to the edge of the ceiling of your room. Put all the red lights on and your room will have a red tint. You can even put more than one color and choose which set to include. Blue today, green tomorrow. It is simple and affordable. To add even more effect, you can switch the lamps in some of your lamps to colored “party lamps”.

Since many emo children like to have ambient lighting, this is the perfect choice. Even simple white Christmas lights can change the look of a room without providing too much light.

Floors:

Do you have boring floors? Ugly tiles or nasty carpet? No problems. Buying a rug can be expensive, like everything ... but many stores sell large but affordable bathing mats, which you can use as smaller carpets. This may seem strange, but there are many stylish large baths to choose from, including faux fur. Bonus: they must be resistant to slipping and, as a rule, easier to clean if they are soaked than the mat.

In addition, a DIY / punk type can easily buy and cut out what is known as a reminder carpet, either on small room carpets, or on your own carpets. The whole idea is to be creative!

Futons:

Have you inherited an old futon that is not the most pleasant ever? Futon covers are expensive, but you can find sheets that fit the futon for significantly less money. In the “mall punk” stores, an average emo child or punk could find all sorts of neat things, such as Nightmare Before Christmas Sheet ... and even in children. sections of ordinary stores, there are many interesting and cute things. Halloween is a great time to look for things like webs and pumpkins; Valentine's Day is great for hearts. Be creative! Throwing blankets — usually cheap and made from fleece — are an affordable option to complete your fun, personalized futon. Oh, and pillows! Do not forget the pillows! You can usually find them at affordable prices. [along with pillowcases of your choice] in large discount stores.

Your kitchen:

Crafts shop, craft shop, craft shop! I can't stress this enough! You can find all sorts of things, cheap and ready to customize, in almost any craft store. Storage cans, jars and containers can be customized to keep anything from spoons and spatulas to food or napkins. These stores, as well as large discount stores, also usually have towels available - although the holidays are a great time to stock up on those that you like. Craft foam can be used for cooking [or dining room] mats - and you can customize them the way you want to boot!

Furniture

While you are in stock at a store, you may notice some unpainted, boring wooden furniture. Or maybe you will go to a thrifty shop and find some disgusting, but functional furniture. Your simple solution? To paint. Just buy paint and sealant. [that part is important; it will protect the paint] and make furniture that suits your needs and personality. Want a purple dresser? Nothing bothers you! You can paint your DIY furniture with a brush or try various methods, such as stencils or sponges, to get different effects or several shades.

General supplies:

If you are going to get into an alternative home design house, it is important to have some basic accessories:

It is always good to have a bucket and a strong cleaner on hand, just in case something spills.

If you are painting furniture or other items, inexpensive toweling is a good idea. For this you can use a cheap plastic tablecloth or shower curtain.

Pencils are good for creating drawings, marking holes for mounting or for recording measurements. Scissors and a sharp service knife should also be bundled with bare base materials, like glue. A hot glue gun is great for decorating, especially if you add items, such as jewels or stones, to objects. [such a plain storage boxes or canisters]The hot glue gun can also be used for minor repairs on wooden products.

After all, when it comes to having an alternative apartment or dorm, without spending money, the trick is to take a look at DIY punk and emo ethics and be creative. As soon as you engage your creativity, there is no limit to what you can do!
