Each rule in life will always be one (or more) exception (s)
It is not good to be a Jack of all professions. Well, it probably is. But how to be Intellectual Jack of many professions ™? Jack Of Many Trades ™ I'm talking about what Tom Gorman calls " Multipreneur "In his book called" Layered: (1) Using a variety of skills and a series of careers for success (2) The hottest career strategy for success in the 1990s - and beyond "(Read more about this book below).
Some entrepreneurs who achieved their success many years ago believe that the strategies they used then will continue to work today and in the future. Well, maybe ... but maybe not! Everything has changed and is constantly changing - too much.
Given the rapid pace of technology and information change taking place today, a strategy that worked five years ago may or may not be so successful today.
TIP: Depending on the type of business you are starting up as a new idea or an established start-up, you may have to enter a market with a multitude of market skills to survive. These skills will allow you to generate additional revenue streams that can help you maintain an optimal level of profitability during periods when a business is slow for all due to economic fluctuations or for other reasons.
My multidisciplinary approach to entrepreneurship
Previously, in my initial days, I accepted what I called a multidisciplinary approach to organization, due to the combined factors of interest and necessity. The latter arose when I found the answer to my work on self-development (negotiations, seminars and seminars) at that time, although positive, a bit “slow”.
Therefore, I focused on creating additional income opportunities using other skills that I had (and / or gradually acquired), such as developing custom table solutions, web design and freelance writing. By doing this, I was even aware of the fact that some people assume that I am a person like “Jack of all professions”. But, always being very versatile, with a natural ability to multi-skill, I was quite sure that what I had in mind could be done.
At some point, after repeated meetings with people who wondered about the wisdom of this approach, I decided to find out if any other businessmen had a similar need for mine. So, I read a book after a book on business and entrepreneurship. I also searched using the word “Multipreneuring” on http://www.google.com.
It is thanks to the search results obtained, I discovered a huge world of multipreners. I learned that some of them work for hire, and others - in paid work.
a). Take, for example, Ken Gabler (www.gaebler.com) which about 3 years ago created three different companies (business incubator, holding and venture capital). On his website in March 2003, Ken had an article entitled " Entrepreneurial evolution , In which he explained why he became a multi-trainer while simultaneously creating three different companies.
One of the reasons why he got what made me teach is the thought that if a person’s chances of success in business are one of three, then only a reasonable business should start three companies, so you can be sure That success at least one of them. According to him, despite the fact that there were problems with starting a business in this way, it still made a lot of sense for that. I could not agree with him more!
Visiting Gabler's website (www.gaebler.com) today will show that he is making progress in achieving his vision.
b). On the net, I also came across Tom Gorman’s book, Multiplayer: (1) Using various skills and career series for success (2) The hottest career strategy for success in the 1990s - and beyond , " (The last time I checked, the book was priced at about $ 11 on Amazon.com). Gorman - the multiplayer itself - is described as working differently as a corporate consultant, commercial banker, executive recruiter and writer. This gives the reader another proof that his book is working.
Useful answers given by three successful individuals / book authors
a). Herman Holtz (which was held in February 2001) was widely recognized as one of the most successful independent consultants in the world with more than 3 years experience. He was often called a consultant consultant. In his book " Quick guide to becoming an independent consultant ”(John Wiley and Sons, Inc., 1999), Holtz admitted that he personally got acquainted with certain“ exceptional people ”who accepted universality as their response to a consultant for specialization.
According to him, one such man showed up to twelve (12)! different resumes , Depending on the specific requirements for the various projects of the consulting project that he identified, he would simply send to the most suitable summary! The best part for me: Holtz checked that NO resumes used by these people provide false evidence of their ability to competently perform broad tasks for their clients with professional pay. ,
b). James Cook in his book “The Initial Entrepreneur” also seems to appreciate the reality that often confronts start-ups (although he did not use the term “multithreading”) when he said that most entrepreneurs illegally succeed by following a single enterprise or line of business until they succeed, In fact, he warned that an aspiring entrepreneur may find it necessary to change the direction in which he / she continues often, possibly with each recorded entry, assuring, however, that these persistent priests are ki will inevitably succeed.
To give his point of view, Cook provided interesting historical details, such as the fact that Henry Ford originally planned to make a tractor, and Edison first invented a telegraph machine (in 1962). From my internet research to life
Thomas Edison, I can also add that he followed the telegraph using the Electric Vote Recorder, which was a commercial failure - making him swear that he would not waste time inventing things that no one wanted.
from). When Robert G. Allen wrote about "multiple streams of income", , he did not exactly say that people should have become multipliners. But he argued this because he challenges people to reduce the risk that arises from one source of income (which can be broken at any time) by spreading sources of income from one to many.
The discovery of the term "Multipreneuring"
Oddly enough, although I was already working as one, when I started, I didn’t know that people are actually called multi-entrepreneur. Fortunately for me, an acquaintance who was a senior manager in a financial services organization for training was to “tell” me about what I was doing, about who “wears a lot of hats”. After listening to me talk about my multidisciplinary approach, he asked me which word I think I could use to describe me, based on everything I said to him.
When I finished laughing at being a “teacher / information broker bringing useful information about self-development to people of different backgrounds / needs” (I didn’t have a word about an elevator at that time), he said, “I have one name that I find it describes you very well from the point of view of what you are doing and about what I want you to start using today. ” Then he asked for my pen and wrote on a piece of paper like this: "Tayo Solagbad is a multiplayer one."
Multipreneurs in business (why are more and more companies diversifying?)
In business, I would define Multipleneur as an individual who intelligently combines various (sometimes self-taught) market skills to generate income, since opportunities are present in the market.
Have you noticed a trend over the past decade? Many well-known and established enterprises are gradually beginning to “add” other specialties to the menu that they offer to their customers. Then there are those who have always been a prejudice against having several competencies, and are now justifying themselves for being so.
A good example of the latter is General Electric - who, however decisive, so that critics do not reject it as a "coincidence", use the slogan " What GE does and affects everyone “This is a multiprocessor company! And they were extremely successful in their Jack Of Many Trades project, so Jack Welch achieved the legendary status he made to provide the leadership that made him work.
There was a time when SONY as a company was not considered a force to be reckoned with in the digital / Internet world. Most people did not even “play” the role that the company could play in this arena. Fortunately for the company, its leadership was “one”: they “saw” in the future and knew that in order to gain greater access to people's homes as an entertainment company, they needed to use the cheapest and most far-reaching marketing resources.
The Internet was unique in that it offered all the comforts and accessibility they received to take advantage of the benefits - while it provided a great environment with which to launch a new kind of product that today captured a larger audience than they could imagine.
Sony's PlayStation success is just one example. (Then, of course, there was a transition, before the Playstation, into the production of laptops with the introduction of the VAIO series).
Intelligent Jack Of Many Trades MUST GET NEW COMPETENCIES FOR IT. S / he (whether individually or as a company) will define a clear vision, and then consider what options (s) for its successful implementation are available. The decision on the most appropriate line (s) of taking action is something that would, among other things, require the development of new competencies that complement each other in the direction of completing the final goal or vision.
Everything Sony has done as a company has further strengthened its ability to turn people into roads as a provider of entertainment resources. By adopting new approaches that recognize evolving technologies and especially the Internet, Sony was able not only to retain the interest and attention of old customers, but also to expand its customer base to attract more and more young people - those who care about the world of gaming software, the Internet technology, virtual reality, etc. The result was phenomenal success in the market - internationally.
Any company that wants to have constant relevance and sustainable long-term success (for example, the ones I mentioned above) should think daily in multisensory terms, otherwise it will become obsolete. A careful look at the trend of mergers and acquisitions, as well as the expansion of the proposals and proposals of many companies today suggest that the leadership of many enterprises already appreciates the importance of such thinking.
In my opinion, entrepreneurs in the 21st century and beyond will have to - wisely - manage adaptable entrepreneurial enterprises that generate several stable income streams for themselves. Only in this way will they be able to effectively deal with the unpredictability of the rapidly changing, technology-oriented markets of their societies - now and in the future. In other words, thanks to Multipreneuring, they will be able to soften their business against negative turns that may arise as a result of unexpected changes in demand for some of their key products and / or services over time.
Multipreners in paid employment
We also have people in paid employment who are multi-trainers. Like their self-employed colleagues, they often "wear many hats." I describe them as people who intelligently combine their skills (sometimes expressions) in various related areas to provide the desired results (often beyond their work requirements) for employers. The reality (doing a web search with the help of Multipreneur and see what you get) is that business / employers today increasingly need such people.
Companies are trying to find and retain people who are capable and capable of effectively performing various tasks. As I said in my article under the heading " How to make yourself UNCERTAIN ”, Any employee who can defiantly repeat and convincingly, the ability to competently perform the work of two (2) or more people will make him less likely for his company to want to let go (negotiations are less reduced).
In the brewery where I once worked, multi-skilling (a process in which each staff was gradually trained to be able to manage each individual plant / machine during production) was a very important part of staff training and development. This method made it possible to optimize output regardless of the unexpected lack of absenteeism, retirement, transfers, etc. Depending on the areas of work and organizational skills of the Shift dispatcher, one operator / staff could get two or more machines to work effectively in such “hard” periods.
In fact, whenever it is time to move personnel and / or secondment, one of the key considerations was the ability to twist the people in question multiple times. All the rest, while remaining constant, the individual with the best multi-screening matrix will be selected to lead the team in the field. This made sense only for this, since this person would then be competent not only to supervise the existing staff, but also to facilitate in-service training for beginners in virtually any area of the process he manages.
In the precursor of this article, under the heading How to be Jack of many professions ™, and why it can make you succeed! I described my personal experience as a multi-discipline employee in Guinness from 1995 to 2001. I also went further to give examples of multipreners in sports, politics and entertainment - pointing in this way, as the early school experience of the reader, in many ways, has already prepared him / her for multiply, although he / she may not know it!
In the final part of this article, I set out " Steps to becoming an Intelligent Jack Multi Profession ™ (or Multiuser) “Ending by developing specific ways in which multi-carburizing can make someone succeed most often at work and / or in life.
