Four pillars of the organ game -2

The path to achieving a high level in organ playing can be a lifelong journey. This is due to the fact that for an organic profession a person must possess many skills. That is why people studying at universities and conservatories to become organists must take many different music classes. Although they are all vital for the novice organist, there are four that I think are indispensable.

1. Organic technology , In this area we are learning the basics of organ playing. These may include depression and key release, touch of legato, finger independence, glissando reproduction, finger replacement, etc. The same applies to pedal play. This area of study includes games of specially designed exercises that develop special organ techniques.

Some people do not consider the basics of the technique of organs to be very important, and they begin to teach the organ with the repertoire of organs from the very beginning. I think that although it can be done, playing the repertoire from the very beginning can sometimes be too difficult for a beginner. Nevertheless, the repertoire can be included and mixed with the exercises quite successfully.

2 Organ Repertoire Of course, this area includes the practice and performance of many organ compositions from various national schools and historical periods. Since the organ's repertoire is so extensive (the earliest survival music was composed about 700 years ago), every organist can learn something interesting and useful.

Naturally, Bach's organ works are the main focus of most organ repertoires, but various other important schools also need to be studied. For example, very popular among artists today are French classical, French and German romantic, North German baroque, French repertoire of the 20th century. Nevertheless, I think that one can benefit from other less-played composers from the Italian and Spanish Renaissance, English baroque composers, etc.

3 Registration authority Organists would not have sufficient skills if they did not know the basics of organ registration. This includes knowing how to register specific types of organ composition, how to mix feet, how to achieve a balance between manuals and pedals, how to set up historical registration methods for various modern organs, etc.

It is important for an organist to know how to make a good seamless crescendo, how to apply the principles of landscape dynamics, how to effectively use a puff pedal, etc. All this can be learned by studying the methods of recording organs.

4. Reading from a sheet Organs also need to read new repertoire pieces daily. This is a skill that will be very useful when organists must accompany the choirs or collaborate with other musicians. If you do not read regularly, organists will have difficulty reading and learning new music.

It often happens that they give us new music to perform with choirs, ensembles and soloists in just a few days ahead (or less). If a person does not have good reading skills, he or she may have a lot of problems and stress in order to quickly learn how to play these new subjects.

Thus, you can see how important these four areas of study (organ technique, repertoire, recording and viewing of view) are if the organist wants to be successful.
