Broome, Western Australia - Jewel in Australia's Rough Diamond -2

Thanks to Broome’s good location in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, Broome’s hotels and resorts provide an excellent base for exploring the pristine environment of Kimberley, which I first discovered in 1974. The Brumsky style of living was a bit rough in the 70s; It's the pioneer city where I lived, but now the Broome resorts and Broome backpackers are hostels in Australian hotels.

You can get to Broome by road or by plane from Perth, Darwin, Port Hedland or Bali.

Broome's people are very friendly and relaxed. Many of them are aborigines. Sport and recreation is a big part of social life. Fishing in Broome is a popular recreational activity.

Broome has a large subtropical climate, and Broome Cable Beach is one of the best beaches in the world (Cable Beach, Broome is included in the list of the top 5 beaches in the world in the top magazines).

Surfing in the Cable Beach Broome during the dry season, from April to November, is small, fast and enjoyable. During cyclones, surfing can become GREAT at Granteoom, where you need to see red sunsets and pindans (unique low local trees and bushes that thrive in Kimberley soils).

Also one of the biggest annual events is the “Brum races”. Racing is a very popular event in Broome, and I recommend reschedule your stay in Broome.

In August, the main event of Bruma is Shinju Matsuri (Pearl Festival). If you want to enjoy the happy times of the festival, then pay for booking your room at the Hotel Broome in advance.

When you first enter Broome and are ready to explore this incredible place, your first stop should be Broome's Visitor Center, which you will find at the corner of Broome-Hwai and Bagot Street. Ph: 9192-2222 or flick on 1800-883-777. They can offer you a wide range of information about what to see and how to get there. They will also point you to the types of events and attractions that suit your specific needs. So you don’t have to shunt to see something that just doesn’t work for you!

A bit about local weather

How wonderful is the weather in Broome? Couldn't be better, right?

The Wet: Oct-Mar is a monsoon season with spectacular tropical thunderstorms and calm nights. A warning. Remember that some of the remote areas may not be available for cars, and this includes 4-wheel drive due to rain.

The Dry: Apr - Sept for those who are looking for the sun, but do not forget about your sunscreen 30+

CRITICAL INFORMATION IF TRAVELING TO REMOTE AREAS

Consult with the Broome Visitor Center or local police before heading to any remote areas. It is very important that you leave your details about your trip to the Police and when you arrive at a safe place to inform them of your safe arrival. If you CAN'T die (we have a tourist who regularly dies in the Australian Outback) or face a very heavy bill for any unnecessary rescue efforts that may be provoked.

Make your choice, stay where and when you want, with a ticket with a few stops. It works only from May to September.

Dinosaur footprints

You can find dinosaur footprints millions of years ago. Only visible during a very high tide (1.5 meters or less). If the tides are too high, you can always check the castings that were made at the top of the rocks.

If you have a chance to go out and check the footprints, please make sure that you care about the reef environment, as it is very fragile and also looks like a sole, since, as you know, stone fish live on the reef.

There is only one way to truly capture the splendor of Kimberley, and this is from the air. As soon as you come on board this turbocharged seaplane, you know that you will experience something that you will never forget.

Enjoy a relaxed flight to Talbot Bay, where you will go to the Rare Breed & to experience the “Horizontal Waterfalls” described by David Attenborough as “one of the greatest wonders of the world” and experience the incredible tidal forces that can be found in Kimberley. You will come straight through the waterfall (let's say tidal conditions) - you will not forget this.

Boat trips

The remains of these flying boats can be found about 1 km from the coast from the city beach and are visible only at very low tides (remember the need for thick sole shoes. See Warning above). Flying boats transported civilians from Indonesia during the early invasion of Indonesia by the Japanese when they were attacked when they landed in waters near Broome. Several people were killed, and the boats sank. What you can see are the remains of these flying boats that were sunk by a Japanese attack.

Natural Treatment Center Chinatown

If you need to relax or feel the need to refresh your seed after a long and dusty trip, then the Chinatown Natural Healing Center is what you need.

Mamabulenj aboriginal tours

Indigenous people have a rich and diverse experience. Mamabulanjin Tours offers a wide range of Native American experiences to Broome visitors, including running walks with bushes, a spear and a boomerang, as well as local stories about Dreamtime (or The Dreaming, as it is sometimes called)

Tours can offer you an understanding of the traditions, history and modern way of life of the Broome natives.

Ladder to the moon

One of the most beautiful natural sights in Broome and seen during Robak Bay during the full moon is Staircase to the Moon.

The illusion of a staircase reaching the moon is caused by the reflection of the moons in a wet mud flat — a tedious explanation of the beautiful view.

Gekko Gallery

Located in the heart of Chinatown, the gallery is Broome’s best gallery for local Aboriginal art. These works of art are sold, and the gallery is also an outlet for drawing and painting, if you need them to capture your visions of this land in their own way.

A bit of Broome's story

Indigenous people, Yawuru, have lived in the area for many hundreds (some say thousands of years). There is also evidence that people sailed all the way from Malaya and Indonesia in search of turtles, dugongs and pearls.

Dugong food near Broome William Dampier was the first European to visit the area in 1688, and Robaca Bay was named after his ship HMS Roebuck. But almost 200 years later, the city was officially recognized and named after the then state governor, Sir Frederick Napier Broome.

It was the discovery of the world's largest pearl oyster (Pinctada maxima - producer of the White South Sea and Golden South Sea Pearl), in which the industry originated, which over the years has made Broome famous - the pearl!

In 1910, Broome produced more than 80% of the world pearl shell, used to produce a wide range of button accessories, furniture and jewelery. In 1913, the local pearl fleet (examples of which can still be seen in Broome) reached a peak of more than 400 ships.

The industry was very lucrative for the captains of the ships, but divers faced real dangers from sharks, sea snakes (the most poisonous in the world), cyclones (underwater divers were dropped downstream, if one appeared above the horizon to allow the ship to run for safety) when the equipment broke down or was defective, and the "bends" (painful death).

The invention of the plastic button in the 1950s led to the rapid decline of Mother Pearl's industry. However, in the late 1950s, the industry began to recover when the cultured mother-of-pearl industry took off. By the year 70, Broome could again boast that it was the center of the global pearl industry, which accounted for more than 70% of global demand.

In the 1980s, another industry began to influence Broome, and this time it was the people - the tourists. These days Broome is visited by more than 100,000 tourists a year, and their number continues to grow as new resorts and older hotels are built. The real change began when the road between Port Hedland and Broome was finally sealed, allowing people to travel all the way in relative safety and comfort.

Broomes Cable Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the world and the cliffs of Pindans (the soil is this time, not vegetation. See above), the white white sands and the clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean are part of these exotic cities. Chinatown boasts an unusual style, all that is a mixture of Australian colonial / Asian, developed in the early days of the settlement and still preserved today.

Broome is also a haven for those of us who live in the sport of fishing. There is either a massive long pier (watch local children catch the fish you kill to catch yourself only along the line, hook and bird feather as bait), or in one of the many tidal streams. But keep in mind that local King Tides can be dangerous, and it is highly recommended to get a tide schedule from the Broome Visitor Center.
