Looking for a beautiful, scenic day away from Greater Toronto? Why not go on a trip to Sturgeon Lake, one of the most popular lakes of Kavarta in Central Ontario. Lindsay, Bobajon and Fenelon Falls create a triangle around the lake and are part of the Trent-Severn waterway.
Sturgeon lake
The lake is actually Y-shaped, 25 kilometers or 16 miles in the longest and no more than three kilometers or two miles in width. The Skugog River and the Fenelon River are the main sturgeon tribes. Scugog enters from the south and passes through Lindsay. The Fenelon River is a small amount of water that connects Sturgeon and Cameron Lake. Small tribes include Emily Creek and Legs Creek. Fishing in abundance in the lake with Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Muskie and Walleye is the most popular.
In the Lake Sturgeon Triangle, Lindsay is the southernmost and largest of the three cities. From Toronto, go east at 401 and turn north on Route 35 to get to Lindsay. Highway 36 travels near the southeastern coast of the lake between Lindsay and Bobaidgeon. Highway 8 runs through the top of the sturgeon between Bobaidjon and Fenelon Falls. Freeway 35 on Route 121 takes tourists back to Lindsay.
Lindsay
Lindsay, Ontario, is located on the Skogog River between Lake Skogog and Sturgeon. The city is home to Lock 33 on the Trent-Severn waterway, 2.1 meters right in the city center. Lindsay has a population of just over 20,000 and is the center of the large city of Kawartha Lakes. The city was founded in 1831 and is a college campus with Sir Sanford Fleming College of the School of Natural Resources, located in the southern part of the city.
Bobcaygeon
The nickname “Hub Kawarts”, Bobaidgeon, Ontario, is located in the northeastern part of Osetra Lake. Castle 32 Trent-Severn connects Lake Sturgeon with Lake Dove in the city center. It was the home of the first castle on the Trent-Severn waterway, built in 1833. The city was incorporated in 1876.
The resident population is 3,500 dramatic balloons in the summer with an area that serves as a popular holiday destination for residents of Toronto and beyond. Bobcaygeon is located on three small islands, as well as on the mainland. This is a great place to stop for lunch and refreshments. The real treat is the farmers market on the hockey arena on Saturday summer.
Fenelon falls
Nicknamed "The Jewel of Kavarts." Fenelon Falls, Ontario is located on the northwestern tip of Sturgeon Lake and is connected to Cameron Lake across the Fenelon River and Castle 34 in the Trent-Severn system. The castle has an impressive climb of 7.2 m or 24 feet. There is a waterfall, but it was greatly changed by people over the years and is directly connected to the hydroelectric power station.
Originally named Cameron Falls, the city was registered in 1874 and has about 1,800 permanent residents. Fenelon Falls was a railroad town, but the tracks of CN Rail were left in 1983 and removed the following year. The right path still exists and serves as a year-round multi-purpose trail, popular with snowmobiles in the winter.
Fenelon Falls is a great place for lunch. There are restaurants in the small center of the city, along the canal and directly hanging on the south side of the waterfall. Falls View Restaurant has an outdoor patio that is just a few steps from the waterfall and offers unique food.
