What are skin tags?
These small pieces of hanging skin, also known as acrochordons, are benign tumors that usually form in folds on the skin. They are mainly located on the neck, armpits and groin area, although they are also under the breast, on the back and chest; they grow from stem-like formations beneath the surface of the skin. Usually no more than the size of an eraser for pencils, they are usually flesh-colored, although they may appear slightly darker than the color of your skin. Tags appear more often in women, especially during pregnancy or after a significant increase in weight.
What causes this condition?
These unsightly tumors occur regularly when the skin rubs together or when clothing absorbs the surface of the skin. Although the exact cause is not yet known, it is believed that they can be caused by the same virus that is responsible for the formation of warts.

These small, hanging patches of skin, as well as unpleasant in appearance, are completely harmless in nature. They are not an early sign of skin cancer, and skin tag removal is usually performed for cosmetic purposes.

Tag processing involves an outpatient procedure; methods for removing tags include cutting them off, freezing them through a procedure known as cryotherapy, or burning them with electric current.
