Karastan carpets were purchased after collecting customers since 1928, because they are very rarely handmade. The original handmade Oriental rug is knotted, so that a binding is displayed on the back of the rug. The more nodes used, the higher the quality. Knots are measured in square inch and can range from 300 to 750. Due to their durability, carpets are always made of wool. Wool is dyed from natural dyes that are made from plants available in the region in which the weaver is located. A finished carpet is more than a home decor; this is a work of art.
Karastan made a revolution in the carpet industry in 1928 when they managed to develop a powerful loom that would create carpets showing the yarn on the back side, thus duplicating the artistry and feel of a handmade Oriental carpet. The next task of Karastan was color. And by the mid-thirties, Karastan produced multi-color floor mats that looked like expensive oriental hand-woven carpets, and it was almost impossible to tell the difference. Karastan has also developed a series of washes that customize the vintage look to the colors.
Karastan exhibited its carpets at the World Exhibition in Chicago in 1933-34. This made it possible to demonstrate another very desirable feature of their carpets. A carpet was distributed to all participants.
After it was contaminated beyond recognition, the crew of Karastan cleared half of the carpet before
a large crowd of onlookers. The cleaned half was restored to its original beauty. This was done twice to eliminate any skepticism from the crowd.
