Building a copy of any thing can be enjoyable, it is actually an activity that many people do who find a pastime. You can build a model sailboat as part of a larger set, or you can build it just to see how it works in real life, whether on a lake or in a more limited space, like a swimming pool. Regardless of why you build a model sail, the only thing that is most likely is that you can get a very creative design and look. This particular design is exceptionally simple and does not require great skill, however, if you are inherently good with your own hands, this will be in your favor.
Necessary materials:
- Scissors
- Stapler
- Stationery knife
- Hand saw
- Drill bit with drill bit
- Required tools
- Balsa wood (2 by 4), length 8 inches
- skin
- Waterproof glue
- Wooden dowel, diameter approximately - inch
- Canvas, cotton film or paper to be used to assemble the sail.
instructions
1) To get started, you will want to create your own body. To do this, shaving your wood to create a body shape, this will be done using your own cutter to form a piece of wood, allowing it to form a point at the end of the tree. You will also want to focus on the sides of the tree, this will eventually become the bottom of your sailboat. Basically, you should design the angular shape when done.
2) For your body to be pleasantly smooth, you will have to polish it thoroughly. This will give it a greater definition. To reduce the overly angular shape you created earlier, you will need to use sand paper to give it a more rounded edge, this will increase the realistic look of the boat you can go to.
3) Now you have to drill a hole in the base structure, this will be used to install the sail support mast. This hole should be centered in the housing and should be drilled to a depth of about an inch. This will add to its structural integrity, although this is a model boat, you will like it to be as close as possible to the real thing. In addition, it will look better with a well-positioned sail.
4) Build your dowel by cutting it off with a length of 6 inches using a handsaw. It must be an exact cut, which is both straight and level. So be patient and take some time to get it right.
5) Drain this newly created dowel so that there are no fragments on the edges, this can be annoying after using the boat.
6) Now you can insert your mast. This will be done by placing your wooden glue in a hole that you previously made inside the case, and then press it into the dowel mast. You may notice that the glue will spew out when you attach the dowel to the body, however you can simply wipe and then allow the pieces to dry. Depending on the glue, it can take as little as 20 minutes and as much as a whole day to dry. At this time of waiting, you can go and create your sail.
7) When creating a sail, you will want to cut your preferred material (paper, canvas, or cotton fabric) into a 4-inch equilateral triangle using scissors, since it must be completely symmetrical. To increase symmetry, use stencils or correct measurements. When the sail has been cut, you can add any additional decorative elements to it, especially if your glue has not yet been installed.
8) Then you can attach your sail to the dowel mast when it is completely discharged. Wrap the sails around the dowel mast so that the edges of the material are not visible.
9) Then you can create rigging for your boat. You will achieve this by gluing the string to the area where the sail is glued to the mast, and for the other end there is enough a staple gun to equip the hull.
Tips & Warnings
You can add a keel to give the boat another realism. You can do this using a little balsa tree, cut into a thin triangle, which you can glue to the bottom of your boat.
Do not allow children to use drills, jigsaw or staples, even if you do it as a family project.
